#1 Thorough Medical Exam
Get a thorough medical exam done in India before you embark on your journey to the land of opportunity. Having to deal with a medical problem as soon as you arrive can be one of the most terrible things that can happen to you.
#2 Dental CheckupGet a thorough dental exam done in India, make sure all cavity fillings if any are intact. Dental care is extremely expensive in US. Many of the medical insurance plans do not include dental coverage.
#3 Gather information on basic medicationMany of you will have medical insurance the day you land here, however finding a doctor here and making a trip to the doctor?s office could be painful first time around. It is a good idea to gather information on basic medication for headaches, stomach upset, fever etc. Make a list of all such common ailments and the medicines to take for each of them and carry the medicines and the list with you. You may end up throwing all of these eventually but will be a great relief if used.
#4 Driving ClassesIf you are not familiar with driving a four wheeler, attend driving classes and get comfortable driving. If you are on your own, not knowing driving could be your biggest handicap in the US.
#5 Obtain International Driving LicenseIn order to drive in the US, either an American driving license or an International Driving License is needed. Obtaining an American driving license will take time, it is therefore a good idea to get an international license from India. This license is valid for one year and can also serve as a photo identification here in US.

#6 Gather information on your place of stay in US
Gather as much as information as possible about the environment around the place of your likely stay in US, how far is it from my place of work, is there an Indian grocery shop nearby? How is the weather currently? Are there people there whom I can stay with or visit frequently?
#7 Learn Basic CookingMore often than not, you will have to cook your own meals, learn the basics, it will help.
#8 Obtain US currencyIt always helps to have some extra dollars or travelers cheques in hand before you land here. It gives an added level of security. Having extra money in your pocket helps you prepare for contingencies like a deposit for a phone connection etc.
#9 Shop sensiblyShop sensibly in India, if you are going to be in Texas or Florida throughout your stay, it does not make sense to carry heavy winter clothes. If you are going to be living with friends or family, cooking supplies are not needed. Don?t over do your shopping and waste your money.
#10 Photo identificationObtain at least two documents with your photograph by which you can prove your identity. Your passport will be one of them. If you are able to obtain an IDP (International driving permit) that should suffice if not a second form of photo identification should be obtained.
